Director, Safety
Phil Smith, Master Sergeant USAR (Ret.), is the Director of Safety for United States Marine Repair, Inc. His 20 year career in the U.S. Army and Reserves included serving in “Operation Desert Shield” and “Desert Storm” as an Operations Sergeant assigned to 1st CSC, XVIII Airborne Corps. His decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, four Army Commendation Medals and two Army Achievement Medals.
Mr. Smith started at Southwest Marine in 1988 in production. During the next four years, Mr. Smith worked in production as a supervisor and as a Quality Assurance Inspector. In 1992 Mr. Smith transferred to the Safety Department where he worked as a Safety Inspector, Safety Coordinator and was promoted to Safety Manager in September 1996. In 1999, he was promoted to Corporate Director of Safety, USMR, concurrent with the acquisition of Norfolk Shipbuilding & Drydock Corporation. His responsibilities include safety oversight of four shipyard locations, development and implementation of safety policies/procedures, ship safety inspections, crane operation/maintenance oversight, accident investigations and safety program development and training.
Mr. Smith is the Safety Committee Chair of the Virginia Ship Repair Association (VSRA) and serves on the Signal Mutual Indemnity Association (SMIA) Safety Committee.
