Aircraft Carriers
Provide a broad range of response for the National Command
Authority. Operate as the cornerstone of Joint/ allied maritime
expeditionary forces in times of crisis.
Operate and support aircraft attacks on enemies, protect
friendly forces and engage in sustained independent wartime operations.

Destroyers DDG - DD
Provide multi-mission offensive and defensive capabilities
and operate independently or as part of carrier battle groups,
surface action groups, amphibious ready groups and underway replenishment
groups.
Primarily perform anti-submarine warfare duty
Amphibious Transport Dock - LPD
Embark, transport and land elements of a landing force for
expeditionary warfare missions.
Transport and land Marines, equipment and supplies in amphibious
assault, special operations or expeditionary warfare missions.
Dock Landing Ship - LSD
Support amphibious operations including landings via Landing
Craft Air Cushion (LCAC), conventional landing craft and helicopters
onto hostile shores.
Transport and launch amphibious craft and vehicles with
crews and personnel in amphibious assault operations.
Frigates FFG
Bring an anti-air warfare capability to the frigate mission
of Protection of Shipping as Anti-Submarine Warfare combatants
for amphibious expeditionary forces, underway replenishment groups
and merchant convoys.
Cruiser CG, CGN Guided missile cruisers perform primarily in a Battle Force role. Multi-mission surface combatants capable of supporting carrier battle groups, amphibious forces or of operating independently and as flagships of surface action groups. Equipped with Tomahawk Cruise missiles affording long-range strike mission capability
Amphibious Assault Ships LHA/LHD
Primary landing ships, resembling small aircraft carriers,
designed to put troops on hostile shores
Used in assault operations of Marine expeditionary units.
Use Landing Craft Air Cushion.
Perform sea control and limited power projection mission.
Provide rapid build-up of combat power ashore.
Fast Combat Support Ships - AOE
(Sacramento Class)
Replenishes Navy task forces with oil, ammunition, dry stores
and refrigerated stores.
Patrol Coastal Ships - PC
Coastal Patrol and interdiction surveillance
Suited for maritime homeland security
Deployed jointly with the Coast Guard
Assigned to Commander, Naval Special Forces
Salvage Ships - ARS
Render assistance to disabled ships, provide towing, salvage,
diving, fire fighting and heavy lift capabilities.
Mine Countermeasures Ships - MCM/MHC
Clear mines from waterways
Avenger class ships designed as mine hunter-killers capable
of finding, classifying and destroying moored and bottom mines.
Uses sonar and video systems, cable cutters and mine detonating
device controlled by remote.
MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND
MSC's largest combat logistics ships
Replenishes Navy forces and can carry more than 177,000
barrels of oil
Receives petroleum products, ammunition and stores from
shuttle ships and redistributes these items simultaneously to
carrier battle group ships.
MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND
Provides fuel, food, ammunition, spare parts and other supplies
Enables the Navy fleet to operate at the highest operational
tempo possible
Alleviates the need to constantly return to port
Composed of ocean tugs, fast combat support ships, oilers,
combat stores ships, ammunition ships, hospital ships
MILITARY SEALIFT COMMAND
Military equipment and supplies for a contingency already
in place in key ocean areas before it is needed.
Provides prepositioning support to the Army, Navy, Air Force,
Marine Corps and Defense Logistics Agency
Ships remain at sea, ready to deploy on short notice.
All ships are crewed by civilians provide by companies under
contract to MSC.
