“A big,
beautiful orchid to Southwest Marine for its environmental sensitivity,” the jury wrote for the awards program.
The city of San Diego’s architecture
and design
community has honored BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair with the prestigious Orchid Award for its
voluntary and innovative environmental efforts
for the shipyard’s Storm Water Diversion System.
BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair is a leader in environmental improvements,
committed to the protection of natural resources through the implementation
of proactive environmental programs. Our management, our workers
and our subcontractors undergo company-designed training and education,
ensuring ongoing knowledge of our environmental standards and Best
Management Practices. Our programs focus on state-of-the art pollution
prevention strategies – geared to protect each element of
our precious environment. BAE Systems Ship Repair facilities have implemented sophisticated
stormwater management programs, including stormwater diversion systems.
Hazardous materials source reduction strategies include the use of
environmentally-friendly products which reduce emissions into the air.
Our comprehensive recycling programs evaluate waste streams
to determine the most appropriate recycling technology. Proof of
our commitment to the environment is evidenced by the selection
of BAE Systems San Diego Ship Repair by the Environmental Protection Agency
as a participant in a pilot Environmental Management System implementation
project. Additionally, our Norfolk, Va., shipyard is one of only
a handful of businesses to receive the highest-level, River Star
award from the Elizabeth River Project for environmental contributions
to improving the health of the river. The "Model Level"
award recognizes leaders in environmental stewardship with documented
exceptional pollution prevention and wildlife habitat protection.
