FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
- Southwest
Marine, Inc. (SWM) recently held a dedication ceremony for the
shipyard's new office complex and a ribbon-cutting celebration
for the new on-site fitness center. SWM is a member of the United
States Marine Repair (USMR) family of shipyards, America's largest
non-nuclear ship repair, conversion, overhaul and modernization
company. In addition to San Diego, USMR facilities are located
in San Pedro and San Francisco, Calif. (San Francisco Drydock);
Norfolk, Va. (NORSHIPCO, the location of the company's corporate
headquarters); and Ingleside, Texas.
On November 7th, the new office complex was named after and dedicated
to B. Edward Ewing, USMR's CEO. According to Monty Dickinson,
SWM's president and president of USMR West, "Ever since Ed
joined SWM, bringing with him the "People are Important"
philosophy, he has been committed to enhancing the quality of
life for our sailors, while their ships are undergoing repair
and maintenance in our facilities. His concern for the needs of
the sailors and our workforce is the reason for naming the building
after him. It is a very fitting tribute." Dickinson also
added, "The new office complex provides a modern, state-of-the-art
working environment for the people from SUPSHIP, DCAA and our
own people. All of the old, outdated trailers, which used to house
these folks, are now gone, eliminating a real eyesore from the
yard. Additionally, the conveniently located, on-site fitness
center offers our sailors and our employees an opportunity to
stay in shape using all the newest exercise equipment. The gym
gives us another way to show our appreciation for the military
and the people we employee."
The fitness center also offers certified personal trainers for
private consultations, nutrition recommendations, limited orthopedic
exercise, one-on-one guidance on equipment usage, Navy Physical
Readiness (PRT) Test screening and remedial training, a large
calisthenics area, personal lockers, showers and steam rooms.
The exercise equipment includes treadmills, Lifecycle bicycles,
17 Nautilus NITRO stations, freerunner elliptical trainers and
weights. The center is open Monday through Friday, 5:00 a.m. to
9:00 p.m.
Along with the addition of the new office complex and fitness
center, over the last several years, USMR yards have undergone
complete transformations. The SWM San Diego facility has installed
extensive landscaping, built an 850-space parking lot for sailors
and employees, constructed and remodeled several new office buildings
and a state-of-the-art training center, remodeled and added new
restrooms and eating areas and installed an award-winning storm
water diversion system.
Monty Dickinson served as master of ceremonies for the celebration.
Frank Carlucci, former secretary of defense and assistant to President
Reagan for national security affairs; CEO B. Edward Ewing; retired
Vice Adm. Alexander J. Krekich, USMR's COO; Frank Urtasun, chairman
of the board of San Diego's port commissioners; Captain Coumes,
SUPSHIP; and San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox addressed the
crowd.
The Navy Band Southwest provided entertainment, Whole Foods Market
shared nutrition tips for a healthy lifestyle, and a private lunch
was held on the outside patio of the new office complex. Additionally,
Rod Luck from KUSI TV conducted a live broadcast from the shipyard
during the festivities.
The Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C.-based private investment
firm, owns USMR.
