FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
–
The U.S. Navy has, once again, awarded Southwest Marine (SWM), a
member of the United State Marine Repair (USMR) family of shipyards,
Aegis Excellence Awards for outstanding performance on USS SHILOH
(CG 67) and USS CHANCELLORSVILLE (CG 62).
Monty Dickinson, SWM’s president, said, "This marks the
third and fourth times that the SWM team has won this prestigious
award. We were first honored in 1994 for an excellent job on USS
VALLEY FORGE, a TICONDEROGA/AEGIS-class cruiser home ported in San
Diego. The Navy presented us with our second AEGIS Excellence Award
in 1999 for outstanding performance on USS DECATUR. Once again,
the talented people at SWM have demonstrated their extensive skills,
knowledge, dedication and team work and have made me very proud
to be their leader." Dickinson added, "I am also pleased
to be able to provide our biggest customer, the U.S. Navy, with
such a high level of service and to contribute to the readiness
of our fleet."
These current awards recognize SWM for exceptional performance in
the successful execution of the first regular overhaul of USS CHANCELLORSVILLE.
The modernization package on the ship was unprecedented in its scope
and complexity, encompassing the first West Coast installation of
the extensive Baseline 3A Combat System upgrade, as well as numerous
additional Ship Alterations. Despite the challenges,
SWM workers met every established milestone, completing the overhaul
a week ahead of a schedule, which had previously been shortened
considerably.
On USS SHILOH, SWM was responsible for the industrial portion of
this landmark availability. The work package included the installation
of Area Air Defense Commander Prototype at Sea, alterations in support
of the AEGIS Lightweight Exo-Atmospheric Projectile (LEAP) Intercept
Program, the Developmental Test/Operational Test (DT/OT) installation
of SHF Satcom and a full Docking Selected Restricted Availability
repair and modernization package. SWM accomplished this massive
project in an unparalleled nine-week period, despite significant
obstacles.
Both ships were delivered on time or ahead of schedule, war ready
and fully prepared to meet any major crisis events.
USMR is America’s largest non-nuclear ship repair, modernization,
overhaul and conversion company. In addition to SWM San Diego, the
company has shipyards in Norfolk, Va.; (NORSHIPCO, the location
of the company’s headquarters); San Pedro, Calif.; Ingleside,
Tex.; and San Francisco, (San Francisco Drydock). The Carlyle Group,
aWashington, D.C.-based investment bank, owns USMR.
