NORSHIPCO appoints new President
Norfolk, Va. - October 29, 2002 - Tom Epley has been promoted from senior vice president of operations to president of NORSHIPCO, a member of the United States Marine Repair (USMR) family of shipyards, America's largest non-nuclear ship repair, modernization, overhaul and conversion company. USMR is a wholly owned subsidiary of United Defense (NYSE:UDI). In this new position, Epley reports directly to Monty Dickinson, USMR's executive vice president of operations.

Al Krekich, president of USMR said, "Tom is certainly deserving of this position, and I am pleased to announce his promotion. He has a long history with the company and brings to the table extensive knowledge and expertise in all areas of the ship repair business."

Epley received a bachelor's degree in nuclear engineering from Pennsylvania State University and a master's degree in business administration from National University.

Krekich also added, "Tom is well respected by his colleagues and customers, and his educational background, combined with his work experience and service in the Navy, make him the ideal choice to lead NORSHIPCO."
