FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
- Cruise ship and yacht owners have chosen to visit United States
Marine Repair (USMR) shipyards for work on their vessels. USMR
shipyards are located in Norfolk, Va., (NORSHIPCO, the company's
headquarters); San Diego, San Pedro and Ingleside, Texas (Southwest
Marine yards); and San Francisco, Calif., (San Francisco Drydock).
Collectively, USMR yards have over 100 year of experience in repair,
maintenance, modernization and conversion of all sorts of commercial
vessels. Imperial Majesty Cruise Lines has awarded the drydocking
and repairs of the SS OCEAN BREEZE to NORSHIPCO. The ship, formerly
SOUTHERN CROSS, is 21, 667 GRT, 604 feet long and 78 feet wide.
NORSHIPCO has also been awarded the contract for the conversion,
refurbishment and drydocking of the ferry, M.V. DELAWARE, by the
Delaware River and Bay Authority. The vessel is 320 feet long,
68 feet wide and displaces 2100 tons. At Southwest Marine in San
Pedro, Calif., work has recently been performed on the fishing
charter vessel CHUBASCO. This mega yacht spent six weeks in the
yard undergoing a drydocking before being lifted onto a heavylift
ship and transported to the Port of Shanghai, its new home. In
Shanghai, the ship is serving as the Port's pilot vessel.
The ASTRAL STAR, a privately owned mega yacht was also docked
at Southwest Marine in San Pedro for a five-week overhaul. San
Francisco Drydock (SFD), USMR's facility in California's Bay Area,
has performed many drydockings on various cruise ships. Since
1995, SFD has been the exclusive provider to Carnival Cruises
(SFD drydocked the HOLIDAY for an intensive 12-day availability
that included extensive underwater body, hull, mechanical and
habitability refurbishment and upgrades.) and Celebrity Cruise
Lines for drydocking repair on the West Coast of North America.
Holland America, Princess Cruises, ANCL and Crystal Cruises have
also paid visits to SFD.
One of the more interesting projects completed at SFD was the
drydocking of the cruise ship ELATION, the first cruise ship drydocked
in the United States fitted with the Azipod propulsion system.
Both Azipod units were completely disassembled and inspected,
with new bearings provided from Kvaerner Masa installed.
Future bookings at SFD include Holland America's VEENDAM. USMR
is owned by The Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C.- based investment
bank.
